PAPERS relating to ecclesiastical affairs of the Papacy in the Grisons (Rhaetia), Piedmont, Flanders, Denmark, and territories of the Holy Roman Empire; circa 1750-1770. Italian and Latin. Archival copies and an anonymous draft (ff. 126-127v). A collection of papers, mostly ristretti di ponenze (i.e. abstracts of formal proposals) relating to religious matters in the related territories and submitted by cardinals to the Holy Congregation of the Propaganda Fide. The author of the ponenze are Cardinals Giuseppe Maria Ferroni (Feroni) for the Grisons (n.d.; ff. 1-75v), Giuseppe Maria Castelli for the Grisons (1764, 1766; ff. 76-101v) and Flanders (1763; ff. 177-187v), Fabrizio Serbelloni for Piedmont (n.d.; ff. 102-125v), Empire and Denmark (n.d.; ff. 147-157v), Giovanni Francesco Stoppani for Empire and Denmark (n.d.; ff. 158-164v), and Giovanni Vincenzo (fra' Lorenzo) Ganganelli for Flanders (1765; ff. 188-197). The Ristretti are endorsed with name of sender and subject. Inc. (f. 2) 'Ristretto / Affinchè l'Eminenze Vostre restino preventivamente informate', expl. (f. 197) 'Diocesis Antuerpyensis', endorsment (verso of second leaf after f. 197) '30 april 1763 / Ponenza dell'Eminentissimo Signor Cardinal Ganganelli / Belgio'. The MS. also includes copies of other papers and letters as follows: (items a-c relating to the controversy in the Grisons between the Capuchin Friars and Johannes Anton von Federspiel, Bishop of Chur): - (a) ff. 45-49, edict issued in 1714 by Egidius Freiherr von Greuth, the German resident at Rhäzüns for the Emperor Charles VI, translated by Francesco Gondola, probably Graf Joseph Franz Gondola (1711-1774), Bishop of Tempe, 1759, Italian and Latin; - (b) ff. 55-56v, letter of Cardinal Giuseppe Pozzobonelli, Archbishop of Milan, 1760, Italian; - (c) ff. 57-58, 59-61, letters of Bernhard Frank von Frankenberg, Abbot and Prince of Disentis (1743-1763), 1761, Italian; - (d) ff. 126-129v, Memoria for the minister of the King of Sardinia relating to the diocese of Lucerne, n.d., Italian, draft and copy, inc. With table of contents (f. 2); occasional marginal notations throughout; upturned notes on f. 2v mentioning Cardinal Fortunato Tamburini (Cardinal 1743; d. 1761), Prefect of the Congregation on the Euchologion. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '392' in top left corner of front pastedown.
