NICOLA SIGNORILI: 'Descriptio urbis Romae eiusque excellentiae'; circa 1425. Latin. Copy, 18th cent. Relazione of Rome offered to Pope Martin V (1417-1431) by Nicola Signorili, secretary to the Magistrate of Rome. Other MSS. copies in Archivio Colonna, MS. II A.50; Vatican City, Vatican Library, MSS. Vat. Lat. 3536 and 6781, Chigi MSS. I.V.168 (ff. 1v-19v) and I.VI.204 (ff. 1-31); Naples, Biblioteca Nazionale, MS. Brancacciano I, C, 35; a MS. in the Biblioteca Bruti and one in the Vatican City, Archivio Segreto Vaticano, MS. II, 108, untraced. The present MS. is listed in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 85a. The text includes (ff. 78v-131v) a detailed list of churches in Rome and their reliquaries, published in Hülsen, Le Chiese di Roma nel Medio Evo (Florence, 1927; now also Rome, 2000), pp. 43-52 (information on Signorili and his text at pp. x-xi), and in M. Armellini, Le Chiese di Roma dal secolo VI al XIX, new ed. (Rome, 1942), pp. 73-79. Title (f. 1) 'Relatione dello stato presente, giurisdizionale, dignità e rendite della Città di Roma, fatta da Nicolò Sigiorili [sic] segretario del Magistrato Romano', inc. preface to Martin V (ff. 2-4) 'Sanctissimo in Christo patri ... Martino Divina Providentia Papa Quinto, Servulus Sanctitatis Voestrae Nicolaus Sigiorili [sic]', inc. (f. 4) 'Romana Civitas post Imperii translationem', expl. (f. 131v) 'saepe periculis liberatam. His itaque de dictae Urbis interioribus enarratis'. Old shelfmark in brown ink (faint) '122' in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 122 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 30v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '336' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8341, 8354, 8400, 8405 and 8591, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 336 (part).
Paper; ff. 131+xxii, plus one unfoliated blank after f. 1. Original foliation in ink '1-129' (ff. 2-131), repeating no. 61. 301 x 220mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. 18th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
