GIACINTO GIGLI: Chronology of Roman kings and consuls and concise chronicle of Rome to 1580; 17th cent. Italian. Copy, early 18th cent. Gigli (1594-1671) is better known for his diary of contemporary Rome (1608-1670), published as Diario romano, 1608-1670 by G. Ricciotti (Rome, 1958) and as Diario di Roma by M. Barberito (two vols. Rome, 1994). For Gigli and his works (but with no mention of the present text) see also DBI, 54 (2000), pp. 673-674. The text is divided into two parts. In the first part (ff. 2v-37) Gigli provides the complete chronological list of kings and consuls of Rome from the foundation of the town to the year 568 A.D. (the list follows three chronologies: from the foundation of Rome, from the last king of Rome, and from the birth of Christ), followed (ff. 31-37) by a concise chronicle of Rome for the years 536-800 A.D. The second part (ff. 37v-84v) is a brief history of Rome and the Papacy from 800 A.D. to 1580, ending with the papacy of Gregory XIII (1572-1585). According to the title (f. 1) the present MS. is the copy of another early 18th-cent. copy of Gigli's text, now Rome, ASC, Camera Capitolina, credenzone IV, tomo 130 (listed in the 1736 inventary of volumes given to the archive by the Scriba Senatus: F. M. Magni, Inventario, credenzone XVIII, tomo 110). Followed (ff. 85-88v) by a detailed account of precedence granted to Roman senators and other members of the papal court in Avignon in the corteges for imperial, royal and diplomatic visits, entitled 'Ordine e pompa con la quale i senatori di Roma cavalcavano o andavano a ricevere l'Imperatori, Re o legati apostolici particolarmente mentre la Sede Apostolica stava in Avignone', inc. 'Prima cavalcavano Gentiluomini'. With running titles 'Consoli di Roma' (ff. 3-37), 'Magistrato di Roma' or 'Magistrati Romani' (ff. 37v-84v). Armorial bookplate of the Hon. Frederick North, later 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/20/D' (front pastedown). '84' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown.
