The MS. includes: - (a) ff. 5-6v, a list of painting in Roman Churches; - (b) f. 32, list of works of art, MS. and book holdings in the Library of San Pietro (now Vatican Library), mentioning among other things the library of the Dukes of Urbino and MSS. from Martin Luther; - (c) ff. 33-50v, brief descriptions of other Italian towns; - (d) ff. 51-60v, description of paintings and frescoes in the Vatican Palace; - (e) ff. 63-67v, 69-85, description and prices of ancient medals and coins; - (f) ff. 68-70, description of paintings by Pietro da Cortona in the Barberini Palace (1633-1639); - (g) ff. 90-93, list of Roman oil lamps and other antiquities in the studio of the Roman antiquarian, collector and bibliophile Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696), entitled 'Musaeum Bellori' and dated 1695 (f. 95v); - (h) ff. 104-118, anonymous tract on the foundation of Rome; - (i) ff. 119-134v, notes from a book by the Jesuit Father Francesco Eschinardi (1623-1703), probably from the Espositione della Carta Topografica Cingolana dell'Agro Romano... (Rome: Domenico Antonio Ercole, 1696; B.L. copy 759.b.2); - (l) ff. 135-138, notes from the Giornale de Letterati, 1668-1675; - (m) ff. 143-144v, description of the pyramid of Caius Cestius in Rome, restored in 1663; - (n) ff. 145-154, lists of paintings in the Farnese and Barberini palaces. Detailed table of contents (ff. 1-1v) added later. Old shelfmarks in black ink '266' (lower left corner of front pastedown) and 'CCLXVI' (in fifth spine compartment): identifiable with Marefoschi MS. 266 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 7. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '598' in pencil in front pastedown. Purchased from R. H. Evans, together with Add. 8490-8501, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 598 (part).
Paper; ff. 177+ii, plus four unfoliated blanks after f. 1, one after ff. 21, 22, two after f. 118; ff. 88-89 with upturned writing. Composite volume. Old foliation in ink '1-182' (ff. 3-177), including blanks, missing leaves foliated '86-87'. 290 x 210mm. Several Italian hands. Late 17th- early 18th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
