STATUTES OF PASTENA and related papers; 1682. Italian and Latin. Notarial copy. A copy of the statutes of Pastena, a small town near Terracina in the Lazio region, famous for its grottos. The copy from the deteriorated original vellum MS. was commissioned in 1682 by the council of Terracina and carried out by Gregorio Patriarca, Baron of Pastena. The text is followed (ff. 87-90) by copies of related notarial documents. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Statuta et consuetudines Universitatis Terrae Pastinae'. The text of the statutes is divided into four books (ff. 1, 29v, 41, 69). Contemporary table of contents (ff. 91v-98) in two columns. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/16/E' (front pastedown). '569' in pencil in upper right corner of bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8533 and 8537, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 569 (part).

'Della eletione delli Offitiali e Sindeci / Cap. 1 / In primis statuto et ordinato che gl'offitiali e sindeci di detta terra', expl. 'ad ogni danno et interesse alle parte d'esse'. Notarial subscription and signature (f. 86v) of Giovanni Maria Antonetto, dated Rome 24 April 1682, with his notarial stamp.
2. ff. 87-90. Six notarial documents signed by the councillors of Pastena, Gregorio Patriarca and Giuseppe Pasquanucci; 1682. Italian and Latin. Copies.
Paper; ff. 98, plus two unfoliated blanks after f. 86, and eight after f. 98. Old foliation in ink '1-85' (ff. 2-86), and '1-6' (ff. 92-98), repeating no. 6. 268 x 202mm. Horizontal catchwords on each page. Main hand (ff. 2-86v): Gregorio Patriarca. Early 19th-cent. quarter binding of vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards, probably a Guilford binding; edges lightly mottled in green.
