PAPERS relating to Cesena; circa 1764. Italian and Latin. A miscellany of historical accounts, letters and witness statements relating to the troubles caused in Cesena in 1764 by riots between those revering the memory and relics of the late Bishop Guido Orselli (1734-1763) and the followers of his successor, Bishop Francesco Aguselli (1763-1791). Contemporary table of contents of art. 1 in two columns on ff. 1-6. Old shelfmarks in black ink 'No 200' and 'No. 31' on f. i. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '540' [possibly meaning 544] in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, possibly lot 544 (part), together with Add. 8564, 8674, 8719, 8786, and possibly 8536, 8507, 8538, 8800.
Paper; ; ff. 66+iii, plus eleven unfoliated blanks after f. 60. Composite volume. 288 x 210mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand for arts. 1 and 2. Contemporary Italian quarter binding of green leather with gilt-tooled spine and decorated paper covers over pasteboards.

Inc. of the preface (ff. 7-10) 'Discorso preliminare / I fonti, da cui è tratta la presente istoria', inc. (f. 11) 'Ciò che è accaduto nella Città di Cesena per rapporto a Monsignor Orselli', expl. 'e cosi disanimati tutti gli altri a studiare'.
2. ff. 56-60v. 'Riflessioni sopra l'Editto di Monsignor Aguselli Vescovo di Cesena, concernente il culto che dal popolo di detta città si presta al sepolcro ed alle reliquie del servo di Dio Monsignor Guido de conti Orselli ... dedicate al merito sovragrande del Reverendissimo Padre Tommasi Celestino ...', notes on Bishop Aguselli's edict relating to the cult of the late Bishop Orselli, dedicated to Father Celestino Tommasi; circa 1754. (f. 62) 'Roma 24 novembre 1764 / Benchè nelo pasato vi abbia scritto di non ingerirmi in minima cosa riguardante gli intrighi di codesta città ... Vostro affezionatissimo fratello Romoaldo'.
4. ff. 64-64v. Petition to Pope Clement XIII from the City Council of Cesena; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Alla Santità di Nostro Signore Papa Clemente Decimo terzo ... I qui sottoscritti Consiglieri sudditi ... l'espongono trovarsi questa infelice Città di Cesena'.
5. ff. 65-66. Two notarially approved statements relating to the riots of Cesena; 22 June 1764. Signed, with signature and notarial stamp of Giovanni Battista Grandi. Italian and Latin. Inc.
