MARIO COMPAGNONI MAREFOSCHI: Relazione of Piperno; 1742. Italian. Signed. Account of the visitation of Piperno (now Priverno) in the diocese of Terracina, Sezze and Priverno (near Latina) by Monsignor Marefoschi. He had been appointed referendary of the two Signatures (Justice and Grace), ponente del Buon Governo (i.e. member of a congregation charged with the direction of municipal affairs), and Visitor Apostolic in 1740 by Pope Benedect XIV (1740-1758). Inspecting the parishes and institutions of Rome annually and reporting on their spiritual and financial condition was one of the duties of Visitors Apostolic. For Marefoschi see DBI, 27 (1982), pp. 665-668. Title (f. 1) 'Visita della Communità di Piperno fatta da Monsignor Illustrissimo e Reverendissimo Mario Marefoschi Visitatore Apostolico nell'anno 1742', inc. (f. 2) 'Mario Marefoschi Referendario dell'una e dell'altra Segnatura / Ponente della Sacra Congregazione del Buon Governo Visitatore Apostolico della Communità di Piperno / Quantunque con le Visite della Communità di Piperno fatte tanto nell'anno 1723', expl. (f. 96v) 'Data in Piperno dalla nostra residenza questo di 12 giugno 1742 / Mario Marefoschi visitatore', followed (ff. 96v-99) by the index of the decrees, entitled 'Decreti della Sacra Congregazione del Buon Governo fatti sopra la presente visita li 5 decembre 1742'. The MS. also includes (f. 100) an autograph letter of Marco Bartolaccini, town official of Piperno, dated 26 June 1743. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '200' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8476, 8479, 8480, 8482, 8483, and 8661, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 200 (part).
Paper; ff. 100+ii. Old pagination in ink '1-192' (ff. 2-99), omitting f. 27, a later addition. 269 x 192mm. One Italian hand. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with covers of marble paper over pasteboards.
