LIVES of the Dukes of Urbino, and Accounts of the disputed right of succession to the duchy; 17th cent. Italian and Latin. The MS. contains: - (a) art. 1, ff. 1-88v, an anonymous life of Federico II da Montefeltro (1422-1482); - (b) art. 2, ff. 89-116, the autobiography of the last Duke Francesco Maria II della Rovere (1548-1631); - (c) art. 2, ff. 116-164v (following Francesco Maria's autobiography without break) the relazione of Urbino written for Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) by the Venetian diplomat Antonio Donati relating to the death of Federico Ubaldo della Rovere (1605-1623), son of Francesco Maria II, and the dispute over the right of succession to the duchy; - (d) art. 3, ff. 165-185, another copy of Donati's relazione; - (e) art. 4, ff. 186-215, a relazione of Urbino and its territory offered to Cardinal Vincenzo Costaguti when appointed papal legate of the town in 1648. For another MS. copy of art. 2 see Add. 20075, ff. 92-147. Francesco Maria's autobiography was also published by F. Saverio Passeri Ciacca as Memorie concernenti la Vita di Francesco Maria II della Rovere ... scritte da se medesimo, coll'aggiunta di tutto ciò che accadde nella devoluzione de' di lui stati alla Santa Sede di Antonio Donato nobile veneto in Nuova raccolta d'opuscoli scientifici e filologici, t. xxix (Venice: Simone Occhi, 1776), no. xv, B.L. copy 247.a.28. Old foliation in ink '119-170' (ff. 165-215), including blank after f. 185. 295 x 202mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Two Italian hands: - (a) arts. 1-2, ff. 1-164v; - (b) arts. 3-4, ff. 165-215. 19th-cent. binding of quarter vellum over pasteboards (Guilford binding?)

'Relatione della Legatione d'Urbino con piena notizia della Giurisdizioni, Fortezze, Città e Famiglie nobili che sono in quello Stato, data da persona ben informata e dotta al Cardinale Vincenzo Costaguti a di 15 di giugno 1648, che vi fu dichiarato legato'; 1648. Inc. 'Sotto il nome della legazione d'Urbino', expl. 'spero almen di riportar lode d'haver scritto di ciascheduno / Sine ira, sine studio, quorum causas procul habeo'.
