GIOVANNI GUIDICCIONI, ALESSANDRO FARNESE: Letters; 1534-1540, 1549-1560. Italian. Copies, 17th cent. A collection of letters of Monsignor Giovanni Guidiccioni (art. 1-2, ff. 1-40) and of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese the younger (art. 3, ff. 41-180v), the composition of which is attributed to Annibal Caro. Giovanni Guidiccioni (1500-1541), was an accomplished man of letters of Lucca and a loyal servant of Pope Paul III Farnese (1534-1549). The pope appointed him governor of Rome, papal nuncio to the Emperor Charles V (May 1535-1538), president of Romagna (1538-1541), and Bishop of Fossombrone; cf. Letteratura Italiana. Gli autori, vol. 1 (Turin, 1990), p. 978, with bibliography. Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589), was the nephew of Pope Paul III: see DBI, 45 (1995) pp. 52-70. The 46 letters (art. 1) of Guidiccioni and 92 letters (art. 3) of Farnese included in the present MS. were attributed in the 17th and 18th centuries to the Italian humanist Annibal Caro (1507-1566), in his capacity as personal secretary first to Guidiccioni (1539-1541), and later to Farnese (1548-1563); cf. DBI, 20 (1977), pp. 497-508, and Letteratura Italiana. Gli autori, vol. 1 (Turin, 1990), pp. 475-476. For other printed editions of Guidiccioni's letters see G. Guidiccioni, Le lettere, ed. M. T. Graziosi, 2 vols. (Rome, 1979). Graziosi, who rejects the attribution to Caro (pp. 32 and 46), lists a collection similar to art. 1 in Vatican City, Vatican Library, MS. Chig. Q. II 49. 2. 3, ff. 69-100, but does not mention the present MS., which also includes (art. 2, ff. 39-40) a letter written by Guidiccioni in praise of Caro. The MS. is listed in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68a. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '378' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8343, 8532, 8715, 8716, 8717, 8764, and 38162, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 378 (part).
