COLLECTION OF LETTERS to Maffeo Albertini of Verona; 1606. Italian. Collection of original letters with paper seals sent in the year 1606 by various correspondents to Maffeo Albertini of Verona (not to be confused with Maffeo Albertini, presbyter and author of a religious treatise against protestants together with Giovanni del Bene, entitled Confirmatione et stabilimento di tutti li dogmi catholici... (Venice, 1553). The MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 1298, p. 100, and in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68a. Title (f. 1) 'Epistole sercreto (?) anno 1606', inc. (f. 2) 'Illustrissimo signor mio osservandissimo / [Ho ricev]uto le due lettere di Vostra Signoria da Camerino con quella per Signor Negrobono ... Roma 28 gennaio 1606 ... Francesco Balfri', expl. (f. 208) 'Illustrissimo Signor mio osservandissimo / Se ben per la indisposition di miei occhi ... Di Verona gli 27 dicembre 1606 ... Aurelio Prandini fece scrivere'. The MS. includes (ff. 12-15v) a letter from the Florentine poet Astolfo Bardini with poems in praise of Albertini; first lines as follows: (a) f. 12, 'Allor che il Tevere', 'Questo sì, ch'è miracolo d'Amore'; - (b) ff. 13-13v, 'Sestina / Maffeo, io piango, e humiliar col pianto'; - (c) f. 14, 'Maffeo, tu, che per prova intendi Amore'. Also included (ff. 100-100v) a letter from Ottavio Rossi (1570-1630), not published in Lettere del Signor Ottavio Rossi. Raccolte da B. Fontana... (Brescia: Bartolomeo Fontana, 1621), B.L. copy 1084.f.23.(1.). Stamp (f. 1) 'biblioth / h.f. / J770', probably from the Biblioteca Falconieri (identifiable with Falconieri MS. no. 4 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 21v). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '669' in pencil in upper margin of f. 1. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 669.
