CASALI NOTE-BOOK and other papers; circa 1624-1627, 1648, 1527. Italian and Latin. Partly autograph. Collection of notes and letter-drafts by Giovanni Battista Casali (1578-1648), camerarius of S. Trinità dei Pellegrini in Rome, ecclesiastical historian and archaeologist. The MS. also includes (art. 2, ff. 132-141v) an anonymous religious treatise offered to Casali, and (art. 3, ff. 142-157v) a decree of Pope Clement VII (1523-1534) relating to ecclesiastical buildings. Another work by Casali, 'Notae de dignibus quae in proprio museo et suis itineribus observavit', in Add. 10364. For Casali see DBI, 21 (1978), pp. 88-89. Old shelfmark in brown ink '470.' in fifth spine compartment. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '356' in pencil at centre of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8610-8613, 8614-8615, 8616, 8617, 8618, 8619, and 8620-8622, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 356 (part).
Paper; ff. 157, plus two blanks after f. 6. Composite volume. circa 280 x 205mm. Three Italian hands: the first hand (art. 1, ff. 1-131v) is that of Giovanni Battista Casali. Late 17th - early 18th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum; restored.

1. ff. 1-131v. Casali Note-Book; circa 1624-1627. Italian and Latin. Autograph drafts. Inc. (f. 1) 'Ponettero degli Heretici che tutte le vendite ecclesiastiche'. Including: (a) ff. 3-5v, 'Avisi recenti in Olanda circa gl'interventi da Catholici'; - (b) ff. 13-13v, 'Relatione d'alcune cose vedute da me nel viaggio di Fiandra et Olanda nel 1627 del mese di settembre'.
2. ff. 132-141v. Anonymous religious treatise; 1648. Latin. Inc. 'Nobili et erudito Joanni Baptistae Casali / Romam me iterum adventasse, optime Casali'.
3. ff. 142-157v. Decree of Clement VII; 1527. Latin. Copy. Inc. 'In nomine Domini Amen / Cum non sine ratione quamplurimi summi Pontifices decreverint'. With sparse marginal notations by Casali.
