LANCELLOTTI FORMULARY; 18th cent. Italian. Copies. Models for letters on various subjects preceded by advice for secretaries. Gilt title on spine 'Lettere del Lancellotti'. The MS. is listed in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68a. Old shelfmarks in black ink 'No. 14' (f. 1, upper left corner) and '106' (f. 1, at centre; crossed out). Acquisition note (f. 1v) 'Comprato dall'Eredità Comolli in Gennaro 1795 da Giuseppe Casali'. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '338' in pencil in upper left corner of f. 1v. Purchased, together with Add. 8521 and 8527-8530, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 338 (part). Contents as follows:
1. ff. 2-14. Rules of conduct for secretaries; n.d. Inc. (f. 3) 'Osservazione di quello si deve pratticare e fuggire / Che non si parli per terza persona'. Preceded by (ff. 2-2v) a table of contents, entitled 'Indice dell'Osservazioni da pratticarsi nella Segreteria'.
2. ff. 15-372. Model Letters; n.d. Inc. 'Lettere di Ringraziamento e Complimento / Al Papa / In ossequiosissimo rendimento di grazie'. Followed by (f. 373) a table of contents. The letters are divided into 11 sections according to their subjects, each section marked by a number in ink '1-11' at the beginning (upper right corner of leaf).
Paper; ff. 374, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 1, 14, 140, 230, six after f. 107, two after f. 196, and one unfoliated leaf (with title 'Lettere di negozio) after f. 314. Modern foliation in pencil '1-373' (followed here), repeating no. 119. circa 256 x 195mm. One Italian hand. 18th-cent. Italian binding of mottled brown leather with gilt-tooled spine in compartments; mottled edges.
