Collection of letters sent to Pope Clement XI (1700-1721) by Queen Marie Casimire Sobiesky (1641-1716), daughter of Henri de la Grange, Marquis d'Arquien and Cardinal, and widow of King John III Sobieski of Poland. Other signed letters from Maria Casimira among the papers of Filippo Antonio Gualtieri (Gualterio), papal nuncio at Paris, in Add. 20551, ff. 3-12v. Title (f. 1) 'Lettere e biglietti scritti dalla Maestà della Regina Maria Casimira di Polonia alla Santità di Nostro Signore Papa Clemente XI dal principio del suo Pontificato sino a tutto l'anno 1709', inc. (f. 2) 'Tres sint pere / Apres mestre umiliée ... du monastere des merge ce 5 ianvier 1702', expl. (f. 258v) 'humble soumission et tres profond respect ... 1r de Feb...'. With Marie Casimire's seal on f. 61. The MS. includes a signed letter (ff. 259-260v) to Gualtieri, from Cardinal Gaspare di Carpegna, Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars, also signed by his Segretary Niccolò (Nicola) Grimaldi, inc. 'Molto Illustre ... Monsignor come fratello. Desiderando la Regina Maria Casimira di Polonia di fondare', expl. 'Roma 3 febraro 1702 / come fratello ... Gasparo di Carpegna / N. Grimaldi Segretario'. Also included: - (a) ff. 174-175v, copy of a letter to Clement XI from Marie Anne Victoire de Romé-Bretteville, Canoness of Lorene, Italian, n.d.; - (b) ff. 225-226v, note from Princess Leonora Boncompagni Borghese relating to a bequest in favour of Elisabetta Boari, Italian, n.d.; - (c) f. 249, Proposal for the rent of buildings annexed to the Queen palace in Rome, to be used as a monastery of Benedictine nuns, Italian, n.d.; - (d) f. 253, Petition of Marquis Filippo Bentivoglio, Italian, n.d.; - (e) ff. 261-261v, 'Copia di Viglietto [sic] del Papa alla Reina Vedova di Polonia', inc.
