DONATO GIANNOTTI: 'Della republica fiorentina'; circa 1531-1538. Italian. Copy, late 17th cent. Historical account of the Republic of Florence (1527-1530) by the political writer Donato Giannotti (1492-1573), dedicated to his patron Cardinal Niccolò Ridolfi. The text was written mainly in 1531, with corrections and additions up to 1538. The autograph MS. is now Florence, Bibl. Nazionale, MS. Magliabechiano XXX, 230; a contemporary copy with autograph revisions in Florence, Bibl. Marucelliana, MS. C 13. A 16th-cent. copy in Add. 48124 (Yelverton MS. 139). The present MS. is mentioned as 'L' among the thirty-six surviving MSS. of the text cited in the critical edition by Giovanni Silvano (Geneva, 1990; Travaux d'humanisme et Renaissance, 237), pp. 56, 66; it is also listed in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68a. The text was published by G. G. Hertz at Venice in 1721, B.L. copy 174.c.13. For Giannotti and other bibliographic references to his work see DBI, 54 (Rome, 2000), pp. 527-532. Dedication to Cardinal Ridolfi (ff. 1-2) inc. 'Prefatione di Donato Giannotti nel libro della Republica Fiorentina a Monsignore Messer Niccolò Ridolfi della Romana Chiesa Cardinale Dignissimo / Tra tutte l'imprese Monsignore mio', expl. 'vi desiderano gloria immortale'; title (f. 3) 'Libro della Republica Fiorentina composto per Donato Giannotti a Monsignor Messer Niccolò Ridolfi...', inc. 'Da che cagioni sia stato mosso l'autore a scrivere della Republica Fiorentina / Capitolo Primo / Non è dubbio alcuno che pochi sariano quelli', expl. (f. 143) 'chi l'abbia saputa conoscere e pigliare / Fu imposto fine alla presente opera Adi xiiii di gennaro ad hore vii et mezzo MDXXXI / In Villa'. Text divided into four books (ff. 1, 24, 60, 108). Pen trials on pasted face of the front pastedown, visible through the paper. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '378' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8343, 8514, 8715, 8716, 8717, 8764, and 38162, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 378 (part).
