FULVIO DELLA CORNIA: Manifesto; 1643. Italian. Copy. The manifesto was written by Fulvio della Cornia (Della Corgna, Della Corgnia; d. 1647), Duke and Papal governor of Castiglione del Lago, defending his decision to surrender the town to the army of the League formed by Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza, Ferdinand II de' Medici, Duke of Tuscany, Francis I d'Este, Duke of Modena, and the Republic of Venice, during the so-called War of Castro between Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) and Odoardo Farnese (1622-1646). The Manifesto is followed (ff. 23v-27) by a declaration signed by the Duke's officers and two messages to him respectively from Francesco Gambacorta (d. circa 1643), a mercenary captain of the papal troops, and Cardinal Pier Donato Cesi, papal legate in Perugia. Other copies of the manifesto and appended papers in Add. 8324 (art. 9, ff. 157-180v), 16485 (ff. 137-157), and 22827 (art. 3, ff. 7v-12v). All published as Manifesto di Don Fulvio della Cornia Duca di Castiglione del Lago sopra la resa di quel Ducato all'Armi della Lega. Il di 29 giugno 1643 (without imprint, [1643]), B.L. copy T.2023.(1). The present MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Manifesto di Don Fulvio della Cornia Duca di Castiglone [sic] del Lago sopra all'armi della lega il di 29 giugno 1643', inc. (f. 1) 'Gia che da persone degne di fede', expl. (f. 23v) 'dirò sempre che mente'. Appended texts as follows: - (a) ff. 23v-25, 'Dichiaratione del Maestro di Campo, Capitani e offitiali', inc. 'Dichiariamo noi infrascritti ... che si ritrovano in questo presidio di Castiglione ... 29 giugno 1643'; - (b) ff. 25v-26, 'Lettera del Signor Francesco Gambacorta al Signor Duca della Cornia', inc. 'Comple al servitio di Nostro Signore che in questo punto ... dalla Torricella li 16 giugno 1643'; - (c) ff. 26-27, 'Lettera del Signor Cardinal Cesi al Signor Duca della Cornia', inc.
