Register of letters from Pier Luigi Carafa, Archbishop of Larissa, to Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci de' Calboli, Secretary of State of Clement XI (1700-1721), relating to the Apostolic nunciature to Tuscany. For Carafa see DBI, 19 (1976), pp. 599-601. Inc. (f. 10) 'Primo Spaccio alla Segreteria di Stato spedito a 24 settembre 1713 / Ieri sera giunsi felicemente in questa Dominante', expl. (f. 128v) 'Spaccio in data de 25 maggio 1717 / Accusando la ricevuta ... che rimaste mi sono non terminate. Umilio all'Eccellenza Vostra ... inchinarmele profondamente'. Carafa's letters are preceded (ff. 1-9v) by copies of briefs of Clement XI announcing Carafa's appointment as papal nuncio at Florence to Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany, Crown Prince Ferdinand de' Medici and his wife Violante Beatrice of Baviera, Prince Gian Gastone de' Medici, and Eleonora Gonzaga di Guastalla, widow of Francesco Maria de' Medici, inc. (f. 1) 'Dilecto Filio ... Cosmo Etruris sibi subiectis Magno Duci / Clemens Papa XI / Dilecte Fili ... salutem et delegimus ordinarium nostrum apud Nobilitatem Tuam Nuncium venerabilem fratrem Petrum Aloysium Archiepiscopum Larissensem ... Romae in die 5 septembris 1713', expl. (f. 8) 'Dilecte in Christo Eleonore Principisse Medices Vidue / Clemenst Papa XI / Dilecta ... 5 septembris 1713'. Old shelfmark in ink 'V/v/8' in paper slip pasted onto f. i. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '392' in top left corners of front pastedown and f. 8. Purchased, together with Add. 8340, 8356, 8376, 8406, 8475, 8481, 8675, 8702, 8732, 8763, and 8777, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 392 (part).
Paper; ff. 129+i, plus six unfoliated blanks after f. 15. Modern foliation in pencil '1-128' (followed here), omitting one leaf after f. 1. 291 x 208mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Three Italian hands. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
