TRACTS relating to the commerce and agriculture of Tuscany; circa 1766-1768. Italian. Copies. The tracts relate to the survey of the economic conditions of Tuscany promoted in Nov. 1766 by Grand Duke Leopold I of Hapsburg Lorraine (1765-1790). The first and third tracts (arts. 1 and 3) are anonymous; the second tract (art. 2) is by Giovanni Battista Bonsi, depositario of Cortona before 1769 (in 1769 the position was occupied by Cavalier Venuti: cf. Pietro Leopoldo d'Asburgo Lorena, Relazioni sul governo della Toscana, ed. by A. Silvestrini, vol. ii (Florence, 1970), p. 208). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '540' [possibly meaning 544] in pencil in upper left corner of f. 1. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, possibly lot 544 (part), together with Add. 8564, 8674, 8719, 8786, and possibly 8507, 8538, 8800.
Paper; ff. 136, plus two unfoliated blanks after f. 101. Composite volume. 312 x 222mm. Four Italian hands: same hand for arts. 1, ff. 27-90, and 2, ff. 102-112. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.

(f. 27) '§ I: Si misurano le forze di uno stato'. Text divided into three 'articles' and subdivided into 67 paragraphs. Second copy (ff. 27-90) lacking introduction.
2. ff. 91-101, 102-112. 'Piano d'istruzione e dimostrazione della maniera di coltivare in Maremma e sua utilità / di Giovanni Battista Bonsi / Depositario di Cortona', two copies; bef. 1769. Inc. (f. 92) 'Diversità de' terreni di Maremma per rapporto alle coltivazioni e smercio dei grani / Li terreni di Maremma coltivabili a grano'. Text divided into three chapters and followed by a table. Second copy (ff. 102-112) lacking the first two chapters and the beginning of the third.
3. ff. 113-136v. Relazione of Tuscany at the time of Grand Duke Leopold I; circa 1767. Inc. 'Il Governo del Granducato di Toscana è un governo monarchico'. Mentions a law issued on 17 Sept. 1767 (f. 132v).
