PAPERS relating to the della Gherardesca and Strozzi families in Tuscany; 1738-1771. Italian and Latin. Drafts and copies. Arts. 1-7 (ff. 1-136v) relate to the controversy (1769-1775) between the Counts della Gherardesca and the Exchequer Court of Tuscany at the time of Grand Duke Leopold I of Tuscany (1765-1790): arts. 2, 4, and 6 are annotated copies of relazioni issued by the Exchequer Court against the Counts, while arts. 1, 3, 5, and 7 are drafts of papers in their defence. The hand of the drafts and of the marginal annotations to the copies may be that of the advocate of the Counts, Migliorotto Maccioni, vice-rector of the University of Pisa, who published a Difesa del dominio de Conti della Gherardesca sopra la Signoria di Donoratico, Bolgheri, Castagneto ... raccomandata alla protezione della Real Corona di Toscana (Lucca: Giovanni Riccomini, 1771); B.L. copy 5357.f.15. Art. 6 (ff. 74-117v) is a relazione by the tax inspector of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany Ippolito Scaramucci, who had been ennobled by Francis II in 1764 for his service; for Scaramucci see V. Spreti, Enciclopedia storico-nobiliare italiana, vol. vi (1932). Art. 8 (ff. 137-151v) is a court sentence issued in 1738 in favour of the rights of primogeniture in the Strozzi family of Florence. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '540' [possibly meaning 544] in pencil in upper left corner of ff. 1, 137. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, possibly lot 544 (part), together with Add. 8564, 8674, 8719, 8786, and possibly 8507, 8536, 8800.
Paper; ff. 153+iii, plus two unfoliated interleaved blanks after f. 36, one after f. 73. Composite volume. Modern foliation in pencil '1-151' (followed here), omitting one leaf after ff. 92, 117. Old pagination in ink '1-32' (ff. 37-52v). 321 x 218mm. Three Italian hands for the copies (arts. 2, 4, 6, 8); one hand for drafts (arts. 1, 3, 5, 7) and marginal annotations to the copies. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
