PAPERS RELATING TO THE DISPUTE BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF LUCCA AND THE PAPACY; 1640. Italian. Copies. The texts relate to a dispute that arose in 1638 between the Republic of Lucca and its bishop Cardinal Marcantonio Franciotti. The dispute caused the excommunication of the magistrates of the Republic by the Apostolic Commissary Cesare Raccagni and the Interdict launched against the people of Lucca by Pope Urban VIII on March 1640. The relazione (art. 1, ff. 1-76v) of the events and the Tract in defence of the Republic (art. 2, ff. 77-181) were written at the request of the Senate of Lucca by the local jurist Lelio Altogradi (d. circa 1660). Arts. 3-4 (ff. 182-199) are anonymous letters relating to the same dispute. Altogradi's texts (art. 1-2) were printed at the government's expense in 1640 in Lucca by Baldassare del Giudice, but under the cover of Colonia and using the pseudonym Girolamo Beraldi for the author. The original MS. and the printing proofs are now in Lucca, Archivio di Stato, Officio sopra la Giurisdizione, filza no. 133. Art. 1 was published as Relatione d'alcuni successi occorsi alla Republica di Lucca negl'anni MDCCCVIII. XXXIX. XL dopo la venuta a quel Vescovato del Signor Cardinal Franciotti scritta fedelmente da Girolamo Beraldi Gentil'huomo Lucchese (Colonia, [but Lucca]: [Baldassare del Giudice], 1640), B.L. copies 592.e.18.(1); other edition 661.i.1.(1), 1318.h.10.(1); other edition 665.i.7.(2), 179.k.5.(1); art. 2 as Difesa per la Republica di Lucca contro le censure fulminate da Monsignor Cesare Raccagni composta da Girolamo Beraldi Gentil'huomo Lucchese, Dottore e Theologo (Colonia, [but Lucca]: [Baldassare del Giudice], 1640), B.L. copies 592.e.18 (2); other edition 661.i.1.(2), 1318.h.10.(2); other edition 665.i.7.(1), 179.k.5.(2).
