ROLANDO PALLAVICINO: Statutes of Busseto; 1429. Italian translation, 1542. Possibly imperfect. Statutes issued in 1429 by Marquis Rolando Pallavicino, called Il Magnifico, and translated from Latin into Italian by Gabriele Scoccabusa in 1542. The Statutes are divided into two sections, the first (ff. 1v-21v) relating to civil affairs, the second (ff. 22v-39) to criminal matters. The original copy of the Statutes in Latin is now Parma, Biblioteca Palatina, MS. parm. 1521. Title (f. 1v) 'Infrascripti sono li Capituli over Rubriche del primo libro de li Statuti in le Terre del Magnifico et Potente Signore Rolando Marchese Pallavicino, sopra li civili negotii. Traducti de latino in vulgare per Gabriel Scoccabusa, notario publico Buxetano currente gli anni del Virgineo parto M.D.xlii. Indectione quinta decima del mese de novembre', preceding the table of contents for the first section (ff. 1v-2v), inc. (ff. 3-3v) 'Ad laude honor et gloria del omnipotente Dio ... / Prohemium / El Magnifico et potente Signore Rolando marchese pallavicino signor de Buxeto et de altri castelli et luochi ... tolse in se il carico de componere li dicti Statuti. Currente gli anni del Virgineo parto Millequatrocentovintinove de la Indicione septima. Como qui seguita / De citationibus et eorum forma / Per che il principio', expl. (f. 21v) 'per el dicto Potesta presente et che sara'; title (f. 22v) 'Infrascripti sono li capituli ... de li statuti del Magnifico ... Rolando pallavicino sopra le cause criminale et damni dati et altri extraordinarii', preceding the table of contents of the second section (ff. 22v-23v), inc. (f. 24) 'Dele accusatione denuntie querelle se debbono tuore per il Potesta et officiali in le Terre del Signor Rolando Pallavicino', expl. (f. 39) 'Commissionis sibi facte vostre'. Headings, chapter initials (2 lines), chapter numbers, and paragraph signs in red. Marginal notes in Latin throughout, note (f. 40v) relating to planting trees in Italian, and copy (f. 41) of the ottava 105 from L. Ariosto, Orlando Furioso, chapter 46, 'Poi che fu a Carlo et a Ruggiero a fronte ... Tra questi cavaglier alcun honore', all by later hands. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '568' in pencil on f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8543, 8565, 8569, and 8627, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 568 (part).
Paper; ff. 41, plus one unfoliated blank after f. 40. 242 x 175mm. i2, ii-iii10, iv12, v8, with quire signature '2-5' in lower left corners of first leaves. One Italian hand, possibly Gabriele Scoccabusa. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards; dark grey edges.
