REGISTER OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF MILAN; 1597. Latin and Italian. Certified copy, for the archiepiscopal chancellor Giovanni Jacopo Bonetti (f. 141v). Correspondence and edicts of the Archbishops of Milan, Cardinal Carlo Borromeo (1560-1584) and Gaspare Visconti (1584-1595), relating to the freedoms of the Milanese archdiocese under the Spanish administration, including copies of letters (ff. 2-18v) to Philip II of Spain and legal proceedings. Inc. (f. 2) 'Sacra Catholica Majestas / Ad eas litteras quas proxime Tuae Maiestatis nomine datas accepi', expl. (f. 141v) 'nel modo scritto di sopra', with notarial subscriptions (f. 141v) by Giovanni Bartolomeo Ormezzano and Antonio Seneca, respectively notary and General Vicar of the Milanese Curia, dated 1 April 1597. Contemporary table of contents (f. 1). Evidence of missing seal (f. 141v). Old shelfmark in black ink 'F.III.45' at centre of front pastedown. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '520' in pencil in front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8551, 8558, and 8561, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 520 (part).
Paper; ff. 141+iii, plus one unfoliated blank after f. 18. Old foliation in ink '1-140' (ff. 2-141). 307 x 212mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Late 16th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
