ATLAS OF FORTIFICATION PLANS of Milan and other towns, castles and ports in Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria, and Elba; late 17th cent. Italian. The volume includes 56 plans of the towns of Milan (with two plans showing its water system and castle), Pavia, Valenza Po, Alessandria, Castel Gavone, Castelfranco di Finale, Caprazoppa, the ports of Varegotti and Porto Longone (now Porto Azzurro), Genoa, Serravalle (with dotted lines indicating future developments), Tortona (with dotted lines indicating future developments), Breme (indicated as demolished in 1646), Novara, Mortara, Vigevano, Abbiategrasso (indicated as demolished in 1658), Fontanetto Po (indicated as demolished in 1646), Arona, Lake Maggiore, Domodossola, Como, with a map of its lake, Fontes, Tirano, Lecco, Trezzo, Lodi, Pizzighettone, Gera d'Adda, Maccastorna, Cremona, Sabbioneta, San Dovale, Vercelli, San Germano Vercellese, Santhià, Trino, Crescentino, Asti, Villanova d'Asti, Turin (before the expansion of the Borgo di Po, planned around 1670), Ivrea, Susa, Pinerolo, Momiliano, Sencio, Chivasso, Rocca d'Arras, Cuneo, Nizza della Paglia (now Nizza Monferrato), Ceva, Casale Monferrato, and Mantua. This final view of Mantua suggests that the collection was possibly put together for one of the Gonzagas. A similar collection of 51 plans (partly coloured) in Add. MS. 28498, with almost identical plans of Tortona, Lodi, Giera, and Cremona signed by Giovanni Stefano Cantone. However, the plan of Tortona in Add. 28498, f. 7, shows as completed the new development of the fortification, which is still indicated by dotted lines in the present MS. (f. 15). The two MSS. have identical plans for Serravalle (Add. 8549, f. 14, Add. 28498, f. 8) with future developments of the fort indicated by dotted lines. Another similar collection of 53 maps in Vienna, Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, Cod. 5562. Plans of Novara, Mortara, Milan, Pavia, Lodi, Pizzighitone, Cremona, Sabbioneta, Valenza, Alessandria, Tortona (before the extension of the fort), and Genoa, dated 1682-1683, in the so-called Louvois Atlas, Add. MS. 64109, ff. 127v-186, 201v-210. Plan of Tortona with the development in place, dated 1734, in Add. MSS. 64809 B. A similar collection of 24 plans of fortified towns and forts of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria dedicated to Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan, commander in chief of the Austrian Imperial army, was published by G. B. Sensi as Piante delle città, piazze e castelli fortificati in questo stato di Milano... (Milan: Agnelli scultore e stampatore, 1707; facsimile ed. Milan, 1978). Contemporary table of contents (f. 1) entitled 'Tavola di tutto il Stato di Milano et Piemonte et parte del Monferate'. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/18/C' (front pastedown). '519' in pencil in top left corner of f. i verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8546-8548, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 519 (part).
Ink on paper. ff. 57+x, of which 56 maps. Old foliation in ink '1-56' (ff. 2-57). 330 x 220mm. 18th-cent. binding of full vellum over paste boards with decorated paper pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves, spine restored; light red edges.
