Manifesto of Count Girolamo Marcello de Gubernatis, resident of the Duke of Savoy in Rome, and reply by Monsignor Pier Marcellino Corradini (later Cardinal 1712) relating to the controversies over ecclesiastical benefits and indults between Clement XI and Victor Amadeus II. Table of contents (f. 1) by a later hand. Old shelfmark in black ink 'F.III.24' at centre of front pastedown; another old shelfmark '36' visible through the paper at centre of pasted face of same pastedown. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '520' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8545, 8551, and 8561, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 520 (part).
Paper; ff. 223+iii. Old foliation in ink '1-222' (ff. 2-223). circa 271 x 203mm. Several Italian hands. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. 2nd half of 18th cent. binding of full vellum. Contents as follows:
1. ff. 2-67. 'Ristretto delle Ragioni, o sia Manifesto presentato alla S. Sede Apostolica per Sua Altezza Reale di Savoia dal Conte de' Gubernatis per ottenere dalla Santità Sua l'amichevole adeguamento delle ragioni nella pendenza degli Indulti'; 1711. Italian. Inc. 'Per quello che concerne la materia degli Indulti'. expl. (f. 54v) 'presso di chi già son noti gl'altri di Lei fondamenti'. Followed by: - (a) ff. 54v-64, 'Facilità date da Sua Altezza Reale', inc. 'Abbenche queste facilità palesino bastantemente', n.d.; - (b) ff. 64-67, 'Dichiarazione con podestà fatta dal Conte e Residente de Gubernatis ... dopo l'udienza di Congedo', inc. 'Il Conte di Gubernatis ... spedito qua espressamente', 22 Feb. 1711.
