PAPERS RELATING TO ECCLESIASTICAL AFFAIRS IN PIEDMONT; 1711-1713. Italian. Copies. Manifesto of Count Girolamo Marcello de Gubernatis, resident of the Duke of Savoy in Rome, and reply by Monsignor Pier Marcellino Corradini (later Cardinal 1712) relating to the controversies over ecclesiastical benefits and indults between Clement XI and Victor Amadeus II. Followed (ff. 123-124) by a letter from Victor Amadeus II to the viceroy of Sicily and another document. Stamp of the Colonna library 'Libraria Colonna' in red on f. 1; for the Colonna library stamp see Bragaglia, vol. iii, T 32: c. 1750. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, possibly lot no. 517 (part), together with Add. 8553, 8559 and probably 8554, 8555.
Paper; ff. 124, plus two interleaved unfoliated blanks after f. 95, and one after f. 122. Old foliation in ink '1-95' (ff. 1-95), followed by modern foliation in pencil for the remaining leaves. Composite volume. circa 270 x 203mm. At least four Italian hands. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards. Contents as follows:
1. ff. 1-95v. 'Risposta alle Ragioni et alle narrative rappresentate nel Manifesto intitolato Breve Ristretto delle ragioni piu palpabili di Sua Altezza Reale di Savoia'; 1711. Italian. Inc. 'Il Ristretto delle pretese raggioni del Signor Duca di Savoia pubblicato poco prima che partisse di Roma', expl. (f. 73v) 'cagione principale di tutti gli altri contrasti eccitati dalla Corte di Savoia contra quella del Papa'. Including (ff. 37-40) letter from Anastasio Germonio to the Duke of Savoy, dated 27 Aug. 1605. Followed by four corollaries: - (a) ff. 74-81, 'Immunità Reale de Beni delle Chiese, e de gli Ecclesiastici', inc. 'Per ben conoscere l'insussistenza', n.d.; - (b) ff. 81-87, 'Feudi dell'Asteggiano', inc. 'Nel Manifesto ove si registra il foglio delle decantate facilità offerte', n.d; - (c) ff. 87-94, 'Vacanti', inc. 'Nel foglio delle facilità del Conte Gubernatis', n.d.' – (d) ff. 94-95v, 'Rivocazione', inc. 'Fra le altre facilità offerte nel foglio'.
2. ff. 96-122v. 'Breve Ristretto delle Raggioni più palpabili di Sua Altezza Reale di Savoia nelle note pendenze e delle facilità date per ottenerne l'amicabile adequamento'; 1711. Italian. Inc. 'Primo / Delle Raggioni nella pendenza degl'Indulti / Per quello che concerne la materia degli Indulti', expl. (f. 116v) 'presso di chi già sono noti gl'altri fondamenti'. Followed by: - (a) ff. 116v-121, 'Facilità date da Sua Altezza Reale', inc. 'Ha benche queste facilità palesano bastantemente', n.d.; - (b) ff. 121v-122v, 'Protesta che ha fatto il Conte de Gubernatis Presidente e Ministro di Stato di Sua Altezza Reale di Savoia ... nelle note pendenze nell'atto della Sua Partenza da Roma, e del suo regresso alla Corte di Sua Altezza Reale', inc. 'Il Conte de Gubernatis ... spedito qua espressamente', dated 22 Feb. 1711.

4. f. 124. 'Copia dell'esemplare della pragmatica, che restò in mano di un superiore, e che si voleva far sottoscrivere da tutte le Religioni'; n.d. Italian. Inc. 'Li qui sotto Padri e Religiosi di questo convento di S. Maria della Consolazione fuori la porta di S. Giorgio di questa città'.
