LUIGI SERRA: Lanterna magica patriottica; after 1797. Italian. Copy. Possibly imperfect (see note f. 31v). A satirical poem on the participants in the Genoese Revolution of 1797 by abbot Luigi Serra (1757-1813), Olivetan friar until 1799, Professor of mathematics in Genoa, publisher and poet. He actively partecipated to the Genoese Revolution and was jailed several times for liberal and democratic ideas expressed in satirical works and articles. The Lanterna magica patriottica was published together with I Novemviri in Le piccole miserie (Genoa, 1864): cf. F. Ercole, Il Risorgimento italiano. Gli uomini politici, in Enciclopedia bio-bibliografica italiana (Rome, 1946), p. 170, with bibliography; see also G. B. Spotorno, Storia letteraria della Liguria, vol. v (Genoa, 1858), p. 78; A. Cappellini, Dizionario biografico di genovesi illustri e notabili (Genoa, 1941). The present MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 485, p. 37. Title (f. 1) 'Lanterna Magica / in cui si vedono passare tutti coloro che hanno figurato e profittato della rivoluzione di Genova del 1797', inc. (f. 1) 'Chi vuol vedere la magica / Lanterna mia politica', expl. (f. 31) 'Ma omai voce in Capitolo / il C. più non ha'. The poem is divided into 129 stanzas. A note by a later hand follows (f. 31v) 'La suddetta Lanterna Magica e la precedente invocazione di Giano fu scritta dal celeberrimo Professore Abbate Serra'. Armorial bookplate of the 5th Earl of Guilford (front pastedown). '62' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8552, 8563, 8572, 8625, 8672, and 8807, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 62 (part).
Paper; ff. 31. 264 x 192mm. Three Italian hands: - (a) ff. 1-9v; - (b) f. 10; - (c) ff. 10v-31. Early 19th-cent. quarter binding (possibly Guilford) of blue leather with marbled paper covers over pasteboards.
