Arts. 1-4 (ff. 2-122) relate to the decision of Honoré II Grimaldi, Prince of Monaco, to abandon the protection of Spain and pass under French protection in Sept. 1641. As indicated in a later note 'Merc. tomo primo, libro 3o' in the lower left corner of f. 1, arts. 1 and 2 were published in Il Mercurio, overo historia de' correnti tempi di D. Vittorio Siri consigliere, elemosinario & Historiografo della Maestà Christianissima..., t. i (Casale: Cristoforo della Casa, 1644), book iii, pp. 699-706 and 695, B.L. copy 939.f.9; other edition, t. i (Geneva: Filippo Alberto, 1649), book iii, pp. 699-694 [sic, but 706] and 695, B.L. copy 300.k.2. They have also been published from papers in Monaco, Archives du Palais, Archives secrètes, A 28, no. 15, pièces 6-7, by G. Saige in Documents historiques relatifs à la principauté de Monaco depuis le quinzième siècle; recueillis et publiés par ordre de S.A.S. le prince Charles III, vol. iii (Monaco, 1891), pp. 636-646. Arts. 5-7 (ff. 123-221) relate to the insurrection of the Catholics of Valtelline, promoted and supported by Spain, against the Grison overlords, allies of France, Venice and Savoy. The three texts, respectively two political treatises in the form of letters to Philip III of Spain and the copy of a 16th-cent. legal document, are well known and had a wide MSS. circulation at the time. They were published together as Discorso Sopra le ragioni della Risolutione fatta in Val Telina contra la tirannide de' Grisoni & Heretici / Al Potentissimo Catholico Re di Spagna D. Philippo Terzo... [Venice?, 1624?], B.L. copies C.76.c.11.(3) and 88.i.15.(3) (the second with MSS. notations); another edition (Paris: Ioseph Boüillerot, 1625), B.L. copy 850.l.14. Art. 7 (ff. 137-221) was quickly translated into French and published as Discours sur l'affaire de la Valteline et de Grisons dedié au tres-puissant et Catholique Roy d'Espagne. Traduit de l'Italien (Paris: Ioseph Boüillerot, 1625), B.L. copies 699.c.3.(3) and 1488.aa.16.(3). The three texts were later translated into English and published by Sir Thomas Roe, who believed the treatises to be by Paolo Sarpi, in A Discourse upon the Reasons of the Resolution taken in the Valteline against the tyranny of the Grisons and Heretiques / To the most Mighty Catholique King of Spaine D. Phillip the Third / Written in Italian by the Author of the Councell of Trent and faithfully translated into English / With the Translators Epistle to the Commons House of Parliament (London: William Lee, 1628), pp. (31)-(101), B.L. copies 591.b.26.(3) and 700.f.6.(4).
