LUDOVICO LUDOVISI: Instructions to Orazio Ludovisi and Matteo Baglioni relating to Valtelline, and to Father Tobia Corona relating to Geneva; 1623, 1621. Italian. Copies. Four instructions drawn up by Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi (1595-1632), Cardinal Nephew and vice-chancellor of Pope Gregory XV. The first three instructions (arts. 1-3) relate to the replacement of Spanish troops in Valtelline by a papal garrison until a resolution on the ruling of the region was reached between Spain, supporting the Catholics, and the league formed by France, Venice and Savoy, allies of the Grisons. The garrison took control of the valley in May 1623, lead by Ludovico's father, Orazio Ludovisi (1561-1624), Duke of Fiano, brother of Gregory XV and commander-in-chief of the papal army. The recipients of the instructions were Orazio Ludovisi and the papal nuncio Matteo Baglioni. The forth instruction (art. 4) is addressed to Father Tobia Corona (1566-1626), Procurator General of the Barnabite Order. Corona was sent on a secret mission to the court of French as part of an unsuccessful attempt to obtain King Louis XIII's authorisation of the conquest by arms of Geneva by Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy. In exchange the Pope was prepared to renounce sovereignty over Avignon. The instructions are published as nos. 14 and 30-32 in Die Hauptinstruktionen Gregors XV. für die Nuntien und Gesandten an den europäischen Fürstenhöfen 1621-1623, ed. K. Jaitner, 2 vols. (Tübingen, 1997; Instructiones Pontificum Romanorum), pp. 741-760, 923-959, with lists of minutes by Giovanni Battista Agucchi and other MS. copies in the Vatican Archives and Library and in the Archivio di Stato in Florence; also in vol. i is information about Cardinal Nepote Ludovisi, pp. 113-167, Orazio Ludovisi, pp. 178-184, Tobia Corona, pp. 268-270, and Matteo Baglioni, p. 251 n. 128. For Father Corona see also DBI, 29 (1983), pp. 293-295. Table of contents (f. 1) by a later hand. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate.
