Marin Sanudo the Younger: Chronicle of Venice and Lives of the Doges from the origins to 1437; 18th cent. Italian. Imperfect. The text is the same as in Add. 8575, with an additional portion covering 1429-1437. Inc. (f. 23) '697 Paulutio Anafesto primo doge fo' elletto dell'anno di Christo 697', expl. (f. 366v) 'sara questo di qua'. The introduction lacks its beginning, inc. (f. 1) 'In capo di Venetia overo della citta di rivo alto', and omits a final chapter on relics and treasures in St. Mark's cathedral, expl. (f. 23) 'S. Hermacora Patriarca d'Aquilegia'. The chronicle is followed by a short account of events and documents relating to Crete, inc. (f. 367) 'dell'isola di Candia come perviene nelle mani della Republica di Venezia', expl. (f. 384v) 'Ego Girardo... complevi et roboravi'. Astrological diagram for the year 421 (f. 2v). The MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 408, p. 30, and Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68a. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/19/C (front pastedown). '229' in pencil in upper left corner of f. i verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8579-8581, 8582, and 8586, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 229 (part).
Paper; ff. 384+vi. First leaf missing. Incomplete contemporary foliation in ink, 2-210, omitting one leaf after no. 40 and nos 181-189 after no. 180. 317 x 217mm. (306 x 217mm. for the last gathering of 18 leaves, ff. 367-384.) Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Possibly written by the scribe of Add. 8575, ff. 326-524. 18th-century binding of vellum on pasteboards; pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves of marbled paper.
