Chronicle of Venice from its origins to 1612; 1st half of 17th cent. Italian and Latin. This anonymous chronicle gives an account of Venetian history from the mythical foundation of Venice by Antenor of Troy to the election of doge Marc'Antonio Memmo in 1612. The Italian language used has a strong Venetian emphasis. The chronicle is preceded (vol. i, ff. 1-34) by an alphabetical table of the most important topics. The MS. is briefly described by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 5, x (1905), pt. i, no. xxvi, pp. 114-115; Add. 8579 is also listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 410, p. 30. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8576, 8582, and 8586, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 229 (part).
Paper. Three volumes. 323 x 224mm. Contemporary foliation in ink, 1-750, continuing through all of them, but excluding the table of contents at the beginning of vol. i. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf with no interruptions between volumes. Quarter binding of vellum with marbled paper covers.
