Chronicle of Venice from its origins to 1615; 17th cent. Italian and Latin. The MS. contains another copy of the anonymous chronicle in Italian with strong Venetian emphasis found in Add. 8579-8581. The chronicle begins at the mythical foundation of Venice by Antenor of Troy and ends with the dogado of Marc'Antonio Memmo. The present MS. adds a short note (f. 276) regarding the wedding of the Emperor Rudolph of Austria in 1614 and the installation of nuns in a monastery previously occupied by Jesuits in 1615. Inc. (f. 1) ' Cronica Veneta / In cui si comprende l'origine e fondazione della Città', expl. (f. 276) 'uno delli Proveditori [...] li Monasterij'. The text is followed by a detailed table of contents in three columns (ff. 277-325) added by a second hand listing all the doges and most important events in chronological order as they appear leaf by leaf, inc. 'Carta i / Teseo Re di Grecia', expl. 'Carta 276 .. nella contrada di S.Gregorio'; the same hand added references to this table in the margins of the main text. The chronicle was apparently cited by Abbot Alessandro Graziani in his Ragioni Parrochiali della Chiesa di S. Giacomo di Rialto in 1725 (see note on f. ii). The MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 411, p. 30, and briefly described by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 5, x (1905), pt. i, no. xxi, p. 111. Armorial bookplate of the Hon. Frederick North, later 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/19/D (front pastedown). '229' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8576, 8579-8581, and 8586, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 229 (part).
Paper; ff. 325+iii (ff. 140v and 276v blank). Contemporary foliation in ink 1-325 (followed here). The original incorrect foliation of ff. 163-276, repeating no. 162, is corrected in ink by the same hand. 330 x 224mm. Copied by three different hands. Horizontal catchwords on each page. 18th-century quarter binding of red morocco with gilt-tooled spine in compartments and marbled paper covers.
