Chronicles of the Venetian Republic; after 1497. Italian. This MS. is apparently a digest of extracts from chronicles recording the history of the Venetian Republic. It is arranged topographically, with sections on Venice itself, 421-1492 (ff. 1, 2v, 11v, 12v-14v); Romagna, 726-1495 (ff. 1, 5v); Dalmatia, 996-1480 (1v-2v); Corfu, 1148-1385 (f. 3); Istria, 1149-1421, (ff. 3-3v); Constantinople, 1204-1453 (f. 4); Crete, 1204-1363 (f. 4v); Archipelago, 1205-1494 (ff. 5, 11); Negroponte, 1255-1470 (f. 5); Ferrara, 1230-1482 (ff. 5v-6v); Padua, 1337-1402, (ff. 6v-7); Treviso, 1338-1388 (f. 7); Ceneda, 1356-1418 (f. 7v); Friuli, 1384-1424 (ff. 7v, 10v); Val de Marin, 1349-1358 (f. 7v); Vicenza, 1403 (f. 8); Feltre, 1404-1419 (f. 8); Bassano, 1404 (f. 8); Belluno, 1404-1419 (f. 8); Verona, 1405-1439 (f. 8v); Lontano, 1440 (f. 8v); Brescia, 1426 (f. 8v); Bergamo, 1428 (f. 9); Crema, 1448 (f. 9); Cyprus, 1374-1490 (ff. 9v, 11); Tenedos, 1376 (f. 9v); Nauplia, 1388 (f. 10); Durazzo, 1392 (f. 10); Scutari, 1395-1478 (f. 10v); and the Pope and the Apostolic See, 774-1497 (ff. 11v-12). The topographical sections are followed (ff. 15-16v) by sections on pacts and agreements, leagues, the revelation of secrets, and the Venetian army, 998-1495. The entries begin with marginal, but not consecutive, numbers which may have been copied from the source of the extracts. Some of these marginal numbers occur in more than one section, sometimes with the same date and text, sometimes with the same date but a different text, and sometimes with a different date and text. The MS. was apparently once bound with other items: it has ink foliation (227-244) in the centre of the lower margin on ff. 1-16, iii-iv, and '8' in the centre of the upper margin of f. 1. It may possibly have followed, and acted as a detailed index to, the text or texts from which it was compiled. It is described by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 5, x (1905), pt. i, no. xvi, p. 108. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/20/C (f. i). '648' in pencil on upper centre of f. ii. Purchased, together with Add. 8503, 8605, 8562, 8577, 8585, 8587, and 8602, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 648 (part).
