Historical Miscellany relating to Venice; 17th cent. Italian and Latin. Copies, partly printed. The MS. contains a detailed chronicle of the war between Venice and the Turks in 1478-1482, and the history of the Council of Ten, or Storia del Consiglio dei Dieci, compiled by Giovanni Antonio Venier in 1628-1629 (see G. Cozzi, Il Doge Nicolò Contarini (Venice-Rome, 1958; Civiltà Veneziana; Studi, 4), pp. 7 n., 230 n.) The MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, nos. 325 and 414, pp. 23, 31, and described by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 5, x (1905), pt. i, no. xxxii, pp. 122-124. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/17/A (front pastedown). '229' in pencil in left top corner of f. i verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8576, 8579-8581, and 8582, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 229 (part).

Old foliation in ink in art. 2, 1-48 (ff. 368-415). 311 x 210mm. Several Italian hands. Five different hands for art. 1: (a) ff. 1-11, 16-23, 26v-27v, 28-76; (b) 12-16, 23-26, 28; (c-d alternating) 76-92; (e) 92-367. One single hand copied arts. 2, 5, and 6. 18th-century binding of vellum on pasteboards; pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves on decorated paper.
1. ff. 2-367. Chronicle of the war between Venice and the Turks, 1478-1482; 17th cent. Italian. Inc. 'Anno Domini Jesu Christi 1478 / Vacante il reggimento del Ducado de Veniesia per l'obito del detto Andrea Vendramino, adi 7. marzo', expl. (f. 367) 'volendo aspetar l'armada andasse in ditta parte, questo se have adi 7. ditto'. The chronicle is divided chronologically into five parts.
2. ff. 368-520. Giovanni Antonio Venier, Storia del Consiglio dei Dieci; 17th cent. Italian and Latin. Inc. 'Coniura Domini Boemundis Thipuli', expl. 'Et io qui ho deliberato di metter fine ai presenti registri non essendo il Negotio di Padova ancora fenitto e ricercando tante instrucioni e considerattioni che à bisogno di fattura particolare. Il Fine'. The author's name is mentioned on f. 420. The text includes:
a. ff. 368-377v. 'Coniura Domini Boemundis Thipuli simul cum Domino Marco Quirino contra Ducale Dominium / 1310 die 15 juni', extract from the chronicle of Venice by Gian Giacomo Caroldo. Inc. 'La congiura delli Nobili querini ... Boemonte Tiepolo ... con alcuni Badoeri ... / Primieramente la Città era mal contenta'. The same text can also be found in Add. 8585, 10695, 48089 (Yelverton MS 980), ff. 279-325, and King's 147 (ff. 123v-131) and 150 (ff. 58-79v). In the present MS. the text is followed by very brief notes from the proceedings of the Council of Ten in the years 1310, 1311, 1315, 1325, 1335, 1339, 1355, 1356, inc. (f. 377) 'E' da avertir se quello che mesi rifferito dall'Historia presente'.
b. ff. 380-385. Accounts of conspiracies against the Republic and consequent actions taken by the Council of Ten, including: (i) '1355. a die 15 d'Aprile. Congiura di Marin Faliero, Docie (sic) Veneziano, Al qual fu tagliata la testa' (ff. 380-381v); - (ii) '1432. Congiura di Marin Cigogna' (ff. 381v-382); - (iii) conspirancies by Piero Giustinian, Giovanni dall'Oglio, Giacomo Foscari (ff. 382-382v); - (iv) 'Due sentencie condanattorie fatte dal Consiglio dei X contra Giacomo Foscari figliolo del Serenissimo, 1446, 1451' (ff. 382v-385).
c. ff. 385-394. 'Descrittion dell'origine per la qual fu demesso del Ducato, et Principatto di Venetia M. Francesco Foscari Doze', deposition of Doge Francesco Foscari in 1457. Inc. 'Quanto possa nelli personaggi grandi'. The account is followed by the list of names of members of the Council of Ten acting in the occasion.
d. ff. 394-409v. 'Diverse cose spettanti al Consiglio di X et all'giunta d'esso', proceedings of the Council of Ten and results of political elections in the years 1469-1583. Inc. 'MCDLXVIIII, die sexta Augusti in libro Regina C. 82. Pri obviando homicidiis...'.
