Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 6, t. xi (1906), pt. ii, no. xcii, pp. 182-183. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/18/E (front pastedown). '87' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, perhaps lot 87 (part), together with Add. 8368, 8369, 8382, 8391-8396, 8397, 8398, 8399, 8412, 8413, 8417, 8418, 8419, 8423, 8424, 8425, 8487, 8515, 8525, 8660, 8706, 8721, 8722, 8723-8724, 8753, 8754, 8755, 8772, and possibly 8366 and 8727.
1. ff. 1-359v. 'Relazione Historica , e Politica delle Differenze nate tra Papa Paulo V. et i Venetiani l'Anno. 1605. Colli negotiati di Diversi Prencipi, e Ministri di Corone, e Finalmente l'Accordo Seguito tra l'Vna, et l'Altra Parte', account of the papal interdict on the Venetian Republic, its causes and resolution; 1605-1607. The text is divided into six books, inc. 'Libro Primo / Godevasi L'Italia nell'anno della Redenzione 1605 soavemente i frutti d'una longhissima pace', expl. 'con il Re dei Turchi molti suoi ribelli, e l'Imperatore di Persia'.
2. ff. 360-371. Anonymous short account of the interdict; 1606-1607. Inc. 'Se bene fra le altre conditioni promesse e con solennita giurate da Venetiani l'anno 1510', expl. 'da tutti buoni non repugnanti alli santi ordini della Chiesa'. An inverted note in lower left corner of f. 371v gives the title of the work, 'Discorso nella difesa contro li venetiani'. A few marginal additions by the hand correcting Add. 8591, art. 6, an earlier version of the same text.
3. ff. 372v-381v. 'Lettera scritta dell'Italia per la Repubblica di Venetia alla Santità di N.S. Papa Paolo Quinto', letter in favour of the Venetian Republic addressed to Paul V from 'Italy'; 1617. Inc. 'Beatissimo Patre, Ancorche io sappia che benissimo resta informata la Santità Vostra', expl. 'Data nel Giardino del Mondo il primo di maggio 1617 / Fidelissima. Piissima et Obedientissima Serva / La tormentata e lacerata Italia'. Preceded by (f. 372) the final lines of a cancelled text 'adherire al zio piu' tosto che al padre di sua moglie ... la pace fra' quei parenti desiderata. Finis'. A capital letter 'D' in ink marks the letter in the upper left corner of f. 372v.
4. ff. 382-385. 'Littera scritta dalli sudditi de venetiani alla Santità di N. S. Papa Paulo V', letter to Paul V from Venetian subjects; 1606-1607. Inc. 'Ricevi Santissimo Padre con pio e paterno affetto', expl. 'per il bene della christianità, et con la conservatione della Santità vostra'. The letter is marked by a capital letter 'E' in the upper right corner of f. 382.
Paper; ff. 385. Composite volume. Three sets of original foliations in ink 1-358 (ff. 2-359; interrupted between nos 48-59), 8-17 (ff. 372-381), and 7-10 (ff. 382-385). 270 x 197mm. Horizontal catchwords on almost every page. A different Italian hand for each article. Guilford quarter binding of vellum with marbled paper covers.
