Varese Letter-Book: Letters of Cardinals Barbarigo, Casanate, and others, mostly addressed to Pompeo Varese, titular Archbishop of Adrianople (Edirne) and Papal nuncio to Venice 1671-1675, together with related papers; 1666-1675. Italian and Latin. Partly autograph and printed. The letters and papers mainly relate to religious and ecclesiastical matters. Correspondents are fully indexed. They include Cardinals Gregorio Barbarigo, Girolamo Casanate, Ottavio Falconieri, Sigismondo Chigi, Federico Borromeo, Vincenzo Maria Orsini (later Pope Benedict XIII) and Pietro Ottoboni (later Pope Alexander VIII), as well as bishops from Dalmatia and the Greek islands, the General of the Jesuits Giovanni Paolo Oliva, and Dukes Ferdinando Carlo I Gonzaga Nevers and John Frederick Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg. An unfoliated 18th-century table (f. i) lists the MS. contents up to f. 180. The MS. is briefly described by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 6, xii (1906), pt. ii, no. cxlvi, p. 346. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. ‘640’ in pencil in upper left corners of f. i. Purchased, together with Add. 8523 and 8531, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 640 (part).
