Giovanni Francesco Buzzacarini: Chronicle of Padua from 1492 to 1520; circa 1520. Apparently autograph. Italian. Imperfect. The chronicle concerns the war between Padua and Venice, 1492-1520, and was written by Giovanni Francesco Buzzacarini circa 1520. The present MS. contains the last part of the chronicle, starting with events datable to around 15 July 1516, inc. (f. 1) 'I solda di Francesco', and breaks off around 26 May 1520, expl. (f. 217v) 'de chontrastare chon ques...'. Probably the missing third volume of the autograph MS, now Padua, Biblioteca Civica, B.P. 155, as suggested by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 6, xi (1906), pt. ii, no. lviii, pp. 162-163. The MS. is also listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 416, p. 31. Marginal notabilia added by a later hand. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '321' in pencil in upper left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8583, 8598, 8599 and 8601, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 321 (part).
Paper; ff. 216 plus one unfoliated after f. 182. Contemporary Arabic foliation in ink 579-797 (ff. 1-216), missing no. 660 after f. 659. The foliation apparently continues the foliation of the second volume of the autograph manuscript now in Padua (B.P. 155), which ends on f. 578. 216 x circa 158mm. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
