Domenico Zavoreo: Istoria Dalmatina; 1603. Italian. Copy, late 17th cent. The history of Dalmatia beginning with the description of the Illyrian region and population in ancient times and ending with the surrender of Split to the Venetian Republic and death of Emperor Sigismond in 1437. Inc. (f. 6) 'Essendomi caduto in pensiero di raccogliere le memorie antiche di Dalmatia', expl. (f. 116v) 'parti dal mondo nell'anno della Natività del Signore 1437, e dell'età sua 70'. The text is divided into five books (ff. 6, 37, 66v, 84, 101). Preceded by a title page (f. 1) 'Istoria Dalmatina / di / Domenico Zavoreo / Nobile di Sebenico / M.D.C.III.', a dedication letter (f. 2-2v) to Fausto Verantio, Bishop of Csanád (wrongly spelled 'Canadiensi' by the scribe), a letter (ff. 3-4v) to Tomaso Surichievich, priest in Sibenik, followed by his answer, and a list of authorities (f. 5-5v), inc. 'Auttori sopra quali e fondata l'Opra / Appiano Alessandrino', expl. 'Libro di diverse lettre Publiche, e Consegli de Sebenzani'. Other MSS. of this apparently unpublished text are Venice, Bibl. Marciana, MS. lat. x 40 and Zadar, Znanstvena Knjižnica, MS. 616. The MS. is described by C. Foligno, 'Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi', in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 6, xi (1906), pt. i, no. xlix, pp. 176-177, listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 331, p. 23, and Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68b, and mentioned in Markotic, p. 267. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/20/B (top left corner of bookplate). '355' in pencil at top left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8604, 8605, 8607-8608, 8609, 8623, and probably 8606, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 355 (part).
Paper; ff. 116, plus four blanks at the end. Modern foliation 1-116 (followed here), omitting no. 60 and one leaf after f. 64. 315 x 215mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Two Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. binding of vellum with flat spine; pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves on decorated paper.
