Correspondence of Sultan Murad III and Bosnian officials relating to the borders of Dalmatia; 1575-1591. Italian translation. Collection of official copies of correspondence relating to the borders between Venetian and Turkish dominions in Dalmatia that was given to Venetian officials. The correspondence cover the years 1575-1591, before the war between Austria and Turkey (1593-1602), and the territorial assessments mainly concern the territories of Sibenik, Split and Zadar. The letters of Murad III, the beylerbeys of Bosnia, Ferhat-bey Sokolovic and Hassan 'Tilli', and the sancak-beys of Bosnia and Klis are arranged in the MS. without regard to chronological order. Originally written in Turkish, the documents were translated into Italian by the official translators Matteo Mauroceni, Andrea Negroni and Michele Membré . Inc. (f. 2) 'Copia in Turco d'un comandamento del Serenissimo Principe Veneziano, mandato al Belgerbei della Bossina, tradotto per Matio Mauroceni', expl. (f. 80v) '1576 à 27 Agosto a Sebenico, tradotta per me Michiel Membré'. A table of contents entitled 'Confini di Dalmatia con Turchi' precedes the text (f. 1-1v). The MS. is described by C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 6, xii (1906), pt. ii, no. cxlii, p. 341 (with incorrect shelfmark '8504') and mentioned in Markotic, p. 267. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '355' in pencil in upper left corner of f. iii verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8603, 8605, 8607-8608, 8609, 8623, and probably 8606, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 355 (part).
Paper; ff. 81+iii, plus 11 interleaved blanks. Contemporary foliation in brown ink 1-90, beginning on f. 2 and comprising the blanks. Modern pencil foliation 1-80 (followed here), omitting one leaf after f. 3. 295 x 190mm. Various Italian hands. Quarter binding of vellum with marbled paper covers.
