Title:

Relazioni to the Venetian Senate relating to Dalmatia, Candia, Albania, Corfu, Zante, and Cephalonia; late 16th cent-17th cent. Italian. Copies, 17th cent. The MS. is described in C. Foligno, ‘Codici di materia veneta nelle biblioteche inglesi’, in Nuovo Archivio Veneto, n.s., 6, t. xi (1906), pt. ii, no. cv, pp. 192-193, listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 332, p. 23, and mentioned in Markotic, p. 267. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '355' in pencil in upper left corners of ff. 1 and 65, and in upper left corners of blank versos before ff. 37 and 50. Purchased, together with Add. 8603, 8604, 8607-8608, 8609, 8623, and probably 8606, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 355 (part).

Paper; ff. 127, plus 23 blanks (after ff. 36, 49, 64, 79, 127). Composite volume compiled by the Library. 300 x 220mm. Quarter binding of vellum with marbled paper covers.

1. ff. 1-36v, plus four blanks at the end. Summaries of Relazioni from (a) Nicolò Donado, Provveditore Generale of the Golfo (i.e. the Adriatic Sea) and Dalmatia, 2 Dec. 1599 (ff. 1-6v); - (b) Nicolò Donà, Provveditore Generale of the Golfo, Dalmatia and Albania, 12 March 1604 (ff. 7-13); - (c) Cesare Bembo, Capitano Generale da Mar, Dec. 1607 (ff. 13v-17); - (d) Daniele Priuli, Provveditore Generale of Candia, Nov. 1603 (ff. 17v-30); - (e) Filippo Pasqualigo, Provveditore Generale of Corfu, Zante (Zakynthos), and Cephalonia, 10 April 1608 (ff. 30v-36).

Old foliation in ink '141-180' comprising also the final blanks. Five gatherings of eight leaves with original Arabic signatures in ink in lower right margins of first leaves.

2. ff. 37-49, plus one blank at beginning and two at end. Relazione from Piero Morosini upon his return from Sibenik; n.d. (but after 1618, see f. 38v). Inc. 'Serenissimo Principe / Col mio ritorno dal Reggimento da Sebenico', expl. 'la conservi eternamente'.

3. ff. 50-64v, plus one blank at beginning and three at end. Relazione from Lorenzo Venier, Provveditore Generale of Dalmatia and Albania; n.d. (but after 1618, see f. 55). Inc. 'Serenissimo Principe Illustrissimi et eccellentissimi Signori / Per debbito del carico di Proveditore Generale in Dalmatia et Albania', expl. 'quanto mi conosco debittore'.

Horizontal catchwords on each page. Two Italian hands, the second occurring only on ff. 63-64v.

4. ff. 65-79, plus one blank at beginning and three at end. 'Relazione Della Dalmatia di Piero Valier ivi Generale in tempo di Guerra dell'Anno 1686'; 1686. Inc. 'Serenissimo Prencipe / La Guerra è la più violenta opperatione de i Prencipi, expl. 'e pretioso contrassegno d'aggradimento al divoto di lui prestato servitio'. Same text as in Add. 8609, art. 1 (ff. 1-17v), and 8611, art. 3 (ff. 36-53).

5. ff. 80-127v, plus one blank at beginning and seven at end. Relazione from an anonymous Provveditore Generale in Dalmatia; n.d. (but after 1593, see f. 108v). Inc. 'Serenissimo Principe Illustrissimi et Eccellentissimi Signori / Ha voluto la providenza de nostri mazori', expl. 'le honorate, degne, et singolar sue conditioni'.

Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. An old number '25' in ink at top of the initial blank.
