Title:

ALVISE II MOCENIGO (1700-1709): Ducal letters to successive Provveditori Generali of Dalmatia and Albania; 1702-1708. Italian. Copies. A collection of Ducal letters from the Doge to Marin Zane, Giustin da Riva and Vincenzo Vendramin, signed by Ducal notaries. The title (f. i) gives a partial indication of the contents: 'Ducali / A Giustin da Riva Proveditor General di Dalmatia / dà 11 Maggio 1705, sino li 4 Agosto 1708'. The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xii (1906), pt. ii, no. cxxxvi, p. 337. Armorial bookplate of Bernardo di Antonio Nani (front pastedown; for the Nani bookplate see Bragaglia, vol. ii, no. 655: c. 1750). It is also mentioned in Markotic, p. 268. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '356' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8610-8613, 8614-8615, 8617, 8618, 8619, and 8620-8622, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 356 (part).

Contents as follows:

1. ff. 1-5. 'Ducali del Senato scritte all'Illustrissimo Marin Zane Proveditor General in Dalmatia, et Albania'; 12 October 1702-17 January 1705. Inc. '12 ottobre 1702 / Si gradisce il sollecitato, e queto imbargo'. Most letters with marginalia and numbered at the beginning in the left margin.

2. ff. 6-217v. Ducal letters to Giustin da Riva; 11 May 1705-19 May 1708. Inc. '1705 11 Maggio in Pregadi / Doppo il corso di più cariche sostenute sempre con virtù'.

3. ff. 218-224. Ducal letter to Vincenzo Vendramin; 1708. Inc. 'Adi 4 Agosto 1708 in Pregadi / Al Proveditor General in Dalmatia, et Albania N.H. signor Vincenzo Vendramin / Doppo haver il dilettissimo Nobil Huomo Giustin da Ripa'.

Paper; ff. 224+ii, plus 18 unfoliated blanks (5 interleaved and 13 at end). 300 x 217mm. Two Italian hands. 18th-cent. binding of mottled brown leather with gilt-tooled spines in compartments; mottled edges.
