DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND OF LISSA (VIS); 1803. Italian. Copy. A detailed historical and topographical description of the island of Lissa (Vis, in Dalmatia) from its origins to the beginning of the 19th cent. The text is dedicated by the anonymous author 'S.B.' to Ferdinand of Habsburg-Lorraine, Archduke of Austria, son of the Emperor Francis I (r. 1792-1835), and the future Emperor Ferdinand I (r. 1835-1848). Inc. (f. 3) 'Notizie storico-topografiche di Lissa / Parte Prima dei Liburni, della loro origine, e del tempo che abitarono l'isola di Lissa. / Nel centro del mare Adriatico', expl. (22v) 'onde su questa formare delle benefiche determinazioni / Fine'. The text is divided into three parts and is preceded (ff. 1-1v) by the dedication letter, inc. 'A Sua Altezza Reale l'Arciduca Ferdinando Principe Ereditario d'Ungheria, Boemia, ec. ec. ec. / Il Regno della Dalmazia può certamente chiamarsi felice ... Da Lissa li 20 Ottobre 1803 / Di V. Altezza Reale ... servo / S. B.', and (ff. 1v-2v) a note to the Reader, inc. 'Avviso al benigno lettore / Questa storico-topografica descrizione dell'Isola di Lissa in Dalmatia non è stato un capriccio ... Vivi felice'. Includes footnotes and copies of two inscriptions (ff. 12, 19v). The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 8, t. xv (1908), pt. i, no. cciv, p. 218. Presented by John Leard to the 5th Earl of Guilford in 1819, with the note (f. 1, inner margin) 'To the Right Honorable the Earl of Guilford with Mr Consul Leards Compliments – Fiune [sic] 3 June 1819'. Armorial bookplate (front pastedown) of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark L/20/D (top left corner of bookplate). '355' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8603, 8604, 8605, 8607-8608, 8609, and probably 8606, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 355 (part).
