DESPATCHES TO FRANCESCO MOROSINI FROM THE MOREA; 1690-1693. Italian. Copies, 18th-cent. Despatches sent to Doge Francesco Morosini (1688-1694) relating to the war in the Morea between 18 Dec. 1690 (date of second despatch from Corfu, f. 5) and 9 June 1693. The author was possibly Domenico Mocenigo, the Venetian Capitano General da Mar before the Republic obliged him to resign and gave the appointment to the Doge himself in May 1693 (see the proposal of the siege of Canea on ff. 160-165, and despatch on ff. 300-302 relating to the resignation of the author from his appointment and addressed to the 'Serenissimo Prencipe Capitano Generale Moresini ... Romania li 9 Giugno 1693'). Inc. (f. 1) 'Serenissimo Prencipe / Vostra Signoria stabilise con sollecitudine in breve giro di tempo l'occorrenze della mia partenza', expl. (f. 309) 'e che il Serraschier sia passato da Larissa a Zittussi per di là trasferirsi a Tebe, et ivi formar il suo campo. Grazie / Romania 9 Giugno 1693'. The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xii (1906), pt. ii, no. cxxxiii, p. 335. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '62' in pencil in top left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8672, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 62 (part).
