Title:

A COLLECTION OF ORDINANCES AND MUNICIPAL LAWS OF CORFU; 1773-1774. Italian. Copies. The collection covers the years 1480-1774, but is not in chronological order. The MS. is entitled (f. 22) 'Libro d'ordini, e Leggi Municipali', and is dated 1773. Inc. (f. 23) 'Noi Reggimento di Corfù, Isola e suo distretto, per la Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia / Per debito del Reggimento Nostro: volendo meglio regolar alcuni azioni nel proceder civile ... adi 27 Giugno 1582', expl. (ff. 179-179v) 'trasportata in idioma Greco a comune inteligenza / Datta li 26 Agosto 1761 / Francesco Grimani, Procuratore Generale da Mar / ... Mattia quartano cancelliere della Città di Corfù'. The compiler is given on the title-page (f. 22) as 'E. S.', and is perhaps to be identified with Stajeo, the recipient of a letter reused as an additional leaf to the MS. (f. 177). The MS. also includes: (a) a subject index (ff. 1-20bis) in alphabetical order entitled (f. 1) 'Raccolta d'Ordini, e Leggi Municipali / Indice de' medemi [sic]', inc. (f. 2) 'A / Animali minuti C. 15', expl. 'Usure esuberanti sopra biade, o altro. C. 158'; - (b) a summary (ff. 21-21v) of calculations applied to real estates for tax revenues; -(c) an incomplete table of contents (f. 177); - (d) a table of contents (ff. 180-180v) entitled 'Terminazioni et altro contenute nel libro ordini'. Old shelfmark in black ink 'H. no. (cancelled) 169' in top left corners of front pastedown and second flyleaf verso. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '568' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8565, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 568 (part).

Paper; ff. 180+iii, plus 62 unfoliated blanks (20 interleaved and 42 at the end). Old foliation in ink 'prima-168' (ff. 23-174), including blanks, but omitting no. 90. 203 x 140mm (ff. 178-180 measuring 285 x 198mm). Late 18th-cent. binding of paper on pasteboards with flat spine.
