ANTONIO COLBERTALDI: Life of Caterina Corner, Queen of Cyprus; 1st half 16th cent. Italian and Latin. Copy, after 1733 (see art. e, ff. 126-128). Caterina Corner (1454-1510), daughter of the Venetian nobleman Marco Corner, was formally adopted by the Republic and married to James II the Bastard, King of Cyprus. Following King James's death she was forced by the Venetians to abdicate in favor of the Republic in 1489. This account of her life was written by Antonio Colbertaldi (1476-1553), a literary figure of Asolo, the small sub-alpine town of the Veneto where Caterina retired upon her return from Cyprus. The main text is followed by: (a) 'Nomi delle Famiglie nobili di Cipro per Alfabetto' (ff. 109-110); - (b) Decrees of the Republic regarding Caterina Corner, 1469, 1479, 1474, 1472 (ff. 111-111v, 113v-118v, 128-130v); - (c) letter (ff. 112-113) of Doge Agostino Barbarigo to Pope Innocent viii, 1488; - (d) 'Discorso (ff. 119-125) intorno alla venuta nella Città della Regina di Cipri', n.d., inc. 'La materia delle sedizioni è la più importante'; - (e) excerpts (ff. 126-128) from the Chronicle by Marin Sanudo as published by L. A. Muratori in Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, t. xxii, pt. iv (Milan, 1733), cols. 1185, 1197, 1199, inc. 'Morto Giovanni secondo legitimo Re di Cipro'; - (g) genealogy (ff. 137-138v) of the Lusignano family, inc. 'Ugo Lubrun Signor di lusignano Francese ebbe tre figli'. The same collection of texts can be found in another 18th-cent. MS., now Venice, Bibl. Marciana, It. VII 8 (8377). Excerpts of Caterina's life by Colbertaldi, taken from both the present MS. and that in Venice, are published in L. de Mas Latrie, Histoire de l'île de Chypre sous le règne de la Maison de Lusignan (Paris, 1855), vol. iii, passim, with mention of the present MS. in vol. ii (1852), p. vii, n. 1.
