TRACTS, AND LETTER RELATIVE TO THE CLAIM OF THE HOUSE OF SAVOY TO THE KINGDOM OF CYPRUS; circa 1633. Italian and Latin. The three tracts also relate to the rights of the Dukes of Savoy to the title of Royal Highness. A detailed list of contents at beginning (ff. 1-1v). Two old shelfmarks (blank bef. f. 1) 'tomo XXXIX' scratched out and substituted with 'Tomo 98.' A two-line title (blank following f. 1) also scratched out. Owned by Frederick North, 5thEarl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '175' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8624, 8626, 8628, 8632, 8639, and 8640, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 175 (part).

Inc. 'Si pregiava il Console Plinio'. The Jesuit father Pietro Monod (1586-1644) was counsellor of Duke Vittorio Amedeo I of Savoy (1630-1637). Published anonymously in 1633 in Trattato del Titolo Regio dovuto alla Serenissima Casa di Savoia. Insieme con un Ristretto delle Rivoluzioni del Reame di Cipri appartenente alla Corona dell'Altezza Reale di Vittorio Amedeo Duca di Savoia, Prencipe di Piemonte, Re di Cipri, &c. Catelmi by Gasparo Giannotti reviewing the previous tract by Monod (art. 2); [1633]. Inc. 'Io ho indugiato sino à hora ad ubbidir Vostra Signoria'. Add. 8635 is a contemporary copy of the same tract.

Old foliation in ink 1-411 (ff. 2-401), including blanks, but omitting nos 245 and 252, and writing nos 101-109, 201-209, 301-309, 401-409 as 1001-1009, 2001-2009, 3001-3009, 4001-4009. 254 x 194mm. Horizontal catchwords on each page. 17th-cent. binding of vellum over pasteboards with round spine in compartments.
