ANTONIO CALERGI: Commentarii delle Cose di Candia; late 16th-early 17th cent. Italian. Chronicle of the island of Crete from the origins to the year 1303 written around mid 16th cent. by Antonio Calergi (1521-1555), a Venetian nobleman in Crete. The text is divided into fourteen books; possibly two more books are missing, as inferred in a note by Apostolo Zeno in another copy of the text, now Venice, Bibl. Marciana, it. MS. VI, 155 (5801), p. 899. Each book is preceded by a title similar to the title (f. 1) of the first book 'Libro primo de i Commentari delle cose di Candia fatte dentro, et fuori, di Antonio Calergi Gentilhuomo Vinitiano'. Occasional later marginal additions. The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xi (1906), pt. i, no. xliv, p. 173. It is also mentioned by Hasluck, p. 203, n. 4. Old shelfmark in pencil 'B.1.' (f. ii verso, top centre). For Antonio Calergi see Panagiotakès, 'Ereynai en Venetia', p. 47 (reprinted ed. p. 53), where the MS. is assumed to come from the Calergi collection, p. 49 (reprinted ed. p. 55). Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/17/C' (front pastedown). '360' in pencil in top left corner of f. i verso.
