ANDREA CORNARO: Historia Candiana, books 13-16; 17th cent. Italian. The MS. contains the last four books (books 13-16) of the chronicle of Crete written in the early 17th cent. by the Cretan historian Andrea Cornaro, son of Giacomo. The books cover the years 1376-1615. Andrea Cornaro, the historian, was a cousin to the man of letters and poet Andrea Cornaro, son of Francesco (see Add. 8640). The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Continuatione dell'Historia detta Candiana del clarissimo signor Andrea Corner / quondam Giacomo Nobile Veneto Tomo II' (similar, but expanded title on f. 2). A sibling volume containing the first nine books is now Venice, Bibl. Marciana, it. MS. VI 287 (5956). The actual text begins here on f. 23, inc. 'Libro Decimo Terzo / Nel 1376 cominciò di nuovo una grandissima discordia tra la Repubblica di Venetia, e la comunità di Genova', expl. (f. 356v) 'in cambio di Zuan Giacomo Zane'. The main text is preceded (ff. 3-22) by a detailed table of contents in alphabetical order, inc. 'Tavola alfhabetale di tutte le cose che si contengono nelli presenti quattro libri / A / Abordo fatto trà l'Armada Christiana e Turcha, e mortalità grande carte 269:270', expl. 'Zante Città, e sua descritione c. 79'. The Chronicle is followed (f. 357) by a paper entitled 'Distintion, et Autorità delli Fori di Candia Città Metropoli del Regno fatta sino dell'anno 1531.', inc. 'Duca / Al Duca solo spettano tutte l'esecutioni', expl. (f. 365) 'et Conseglieri di Candia, sta due anni'. The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xi (1906), pt. i, no. xlv, pp. 173-174. It is also mentioned by Hasluck, p. 203, n. 4, and by Panagiotakès, 'Ereunai en Venetia', p. 71 (reprinted ed. p. 77). For Andrea di Giacomo Cornaro see also S. G. Spanakē, 'He diathēke tou Andrea Cornarou (1611)', in Krētika Chronika (1955), pp. 377-478. Possibly from the collection of Jacopo Contarini (partly donated to the Marciana Library in 1713), as its sibling volume now in Venice. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/21/B' (front pastedown). '360' in pencil in top left corner of f. i verso. Purchased, together with Add. 8595, 8636, 8638, 8641, and 8642, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 360 (part).
