ANTONIO TREVISAN: Collection of papers relating to Candia 1182-1671; late 17th-early 18th cent. Italian. A collection of historical papers, administrative lists, governmental decrees, and peace treaties put together by the public notary Antonio Trevisan. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Racconto di varie cose successe nel Regno di Candia dall'anno 1182: che si sono ribellati dalla divozione dell'Impero Greco, sino l'anno 1669: che restò al poter dell'Imperio Ottomano. / Fermato dal Signor Antonio Trevisan Publico Notaro Ducale'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Certa cosa è che la nobilissima Isola di Candia', expl. (f. 66v) 'che questi siano tenuti à render conto, à tempo e luogo'. The collection contains lists of the Venetian families on the island, the number of individuals belonging to professional categories in different towns, the number of farms and animals from 1644 to 1669. It also includes: (a) clauses (ff. 54v-59) of treaty between Venice and the Turks in Italian translation, 1670; - (b) summary (ff. 59v-62) of the treaty between Hussein Pasha, Beylerbey of Bosnia, and the Procuratore Generale of Dalmatia Giovanni Battista Nani, in Italian translation, 1681, [but 1671]; - (c) clauses (ff. 62v-63v) of the treaty between Venice and the Turks, 1645; - (d) clauses (ff. 63v-65) for the surrender of Candia proposed by General Francesco Morosini to Gran Visir Fazil Ahmad Kiuprili, 6 Sept. 1669; - (e) 'Testamento dell Città di Candia estratto dà Monforio dagli atti di Pasquinio', (ff. 65-66v) will of the town of Candia surrendering to the Turks, n.d (of which a different version in Add. 16516, ff. 178-180v). Another MS. containing the same collection of texts in Venice, Bibl. Marciana, It. MS VII, 525 (7497). The present MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xi (1906), pt. i, no. xliii, pp. 172-173. It is also mentioned by Hasluck, p. 203, n. 4. Armorial bookplate of 5th Earl of Guilford with shelfmark 'L/20/D' (front pastedown). '360' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8595, 8636, 8637, 8641, and 8642, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 360 (part).
Paper; ff. 67+iii, plus six unfoliated blanks at end. Modern foliation in pencil 1-343 (followed here), omitting one leaf after f. 42. 381 x 265mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Late 17th-early 18th cent. quarter binding of leather with paper covers, all mottled in black.
