LEONARDO QUERINI: Papers relating to Candia; circa 1587. Italian. Copy. The MS. contains a detailed geographical description of the island, dated 1 May 1587, and two other short papers provided by the Venetian engineer and technical advisor Leonardo Querini to Pietro Zane, Capitano Generale of Crete. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Informatione del Regno di Candia'. The main text begins on f. 3, inc. 'L'Isola di Candia hà forma più longa che larga', expl. (f. 27) 'al presente soldati descritti all'ordinale per il contado'. It is preceded by a dedicatory letter to Pietro Zane, inc. (f. 2) 'Illustrissimo et Eccellentissimo ... Signor Pietro Zane Capitano Generale nel Regno di Candia / Se in me fussero le forze pari al desiderio', expl. (f. 27) 'Di Candia adi primi Maggio 1587 ... Lunardo Quirini'. Two other brief papers follow (ff. 28-31v) relating to the structure of the fortress of Suda on the island: (a) inc. (f. 28) 'Illustrissimo … Pietro Zane … Candia / Rivolgendo molto nella mente mia Jo Lunardo Quirini'; - (b) inc. (f. 30v) 'Illustrissimo … Pietro Zane … Candia / Varie et molte sono l'opinioni degli Architetti'. Sparse marginal notabilia. Another copy of the main text and dedicatory letter in Add. 48114, art. 8 (ff. 144-169v). The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 8, t. xv (1908), pt. i, no. ccv, pp. 218-219. It is also mentioned by Hasluck, n. 4. Old shelfmark in ink 'no. xii' at centre of f. 1. Ownership note 'Ex Libris N.V. Petri Gradonico' (top centre of f. 1v). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '175' in pencil in top left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8624, 8626, 8628, 8632, 8634, and 8640, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 175 (part).
Paper; ff. 31, plus one blank at the end. Old foliation in ink 1-30 (ff. 2-31, and final blank), omitting f. 15. 221 x 157mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand.
