I. ff. 1-24. Andrea Cornaro: Orazione and Rime; 1598. The orazione and the poems praise Giovanni Giacomo Zane, Capitano Generale of Crete, at the end of his mandate. The Cretan poet and man of letters Andrea Cornaro, son of Francesco, was cousin to the historian Andrea Cornaro, son of Giacomo (see Add. 8637). In 1591 he founded the Academy of the Stravaganti in Kastro (cfr. Panagiōtakēs, 'Italikes Akadēmies kai Theatro. Hoi Stravaganti tou Chandaka', in Theatro, 27-28 (1966), pp. 46-47 (reprinted in Ho poiētēs tou 'Erōtokritou' kai alla Venetokrētika meletēmata (Herakleion Krētēs, 1989), pp. 36-37). Cornaro's poems are interspersed with poems by other members of the Academy. This section of the MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Oratione di Andrea Cornaro in nome della clarissima universita di Candia. Allo Illustrissimo et Eccellentissimo Signor Giovanni Giacomo Zane Capitano Generale nella sua partita. Con una raccolta di rime in lode del medesimo signore. mdxcviii'. As suggested by Panagiotakēs in 'Ereunai en Venetia', p. 67 (repr. p. 73), the MS. could be the presentation copy made for Giovanni Giacomo Zane. Cited in Panagiōtakēs, 'Italikes Akadēmies kai Theatro. Hoi Stravaganti tou Chandaka', p. 47, n. 87 (repr. p. 38); id., 'Ereunai en Venetia', pp. 60 n. 26, 67 (repr. pp. 66, 73); Panagiōtakēs-Vincent, 'Nea stoicheia gia tēn Akadēmia tōn Stravaganti', pp. 54, 56, 59 (repr. 114, 116, 119).
It includes:
1. ff. 2-8. Seven drawings of mottoed emblems in ink and tinted colours, copied from frescoes in a loggia in Crete (note on f. 2v). The subjects of the drawings are: (a) f. 2, a female figure holding a cross and a chalice, probably representing Venice; - (b) f. 3, a compass; - (c) f. 4, the arm of a man holding a plumb-line; - (d) f. 5, God's eye over a map of Crete; - (e) f. 6, a lute; (f) f. 7, an eagle pecking its chest; - (g) f. 8, the face of the radiant sun.
