CHRONICLE OF THE WAR OF CANDIA IN THE YEARS 1644-1651; 2nd half of 17th cent. Italian. Copy. Imperfect. Anonymous detailed description of Venetian military tactics and actions in the war of Candia against the Turks in 1644-1651, during the dogadi of Francesco Erizzo (1631-1646) and Francesco da Molin (1646-1655) and the reigns of Sultan Ibrahim (r. 1640-1648) and his successor Mehmet IV (1648-1692). Inc. (f. 1) '1. Chi troppo scherza con l'Avaritia', expl. (f. 199) 'et ivi si unì col Capitano delle Navi, che anch'esso segullo à quella parte, doppo haver gettato inutilmente'. The text is divided into seven books. Added title (f. iii) 'Historia di Candia Avanti il Valier', followed by a later note 'Dall'anno 1644. Regnante in Costantinopoli Sultan Ebrair Gran Sig.le Sembra divisa in Libri vii ma l'ultimo non è finito': the added title refers to a similar work in eight books by Andrea Valier, entitled Historia della Guerra di Candia, printed in Venice by Paolo Baglioni in 1679. The MS. is described by Foligno, anno 6, t. xi (1906), pt. i, no. xlii, p. 172. It is also mentioned by Hasluck, p. 203, n. 4. Purchased, together with Add. 8595, 8636, 8637, 8638, and 8642, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 360 (part).
Paper; ff. 199+vi. Missing four leaves after f. 6. Old foliation in ink 1-200 (ff. 1-198), omitting ff. 107-108. 296 x 209mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand, with many corrections by another hand, perhaps the author himself, at the beginning. Late 17th-early 18th cent. binding of vellum, with pastedowns and contiguous flyleaves of decorated paper; edges mottled in brown.
